Chris Orwig is a celebrated photographer, author and teacher. He is on the photography faculty at the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA and he is the author of numerous best-selling books. More importantly, Chris brings unique perspective, creativity and passion to all that he does. As a photographer, he subscribes to Marc Riboud’s observation that “Photography is about savoring life at 1/100th of a second.” For Chris the adventure is now, and the journey has already begun – discover, look, listen, learn and live.
Chris traces much of his creative roots to growing up in scenic Northern California, in a home that was designed and built by his father and filled with the art and creativity of his mother. It was there that his creativity and passion was nurtured and flourished. This foundation lead him to a wide range of life experiences which paved the way for Chris to work with some of the world’s best. Ultimately, this has given Chris the an unquenchable desire to capture timeless and intriguing photographs.
As an educator, Chris has had the privilege of teaching and speaking around the world. He has spoken on topics ranging from interactive design, portfolio creation, digital-post production, the power of creativity and the art and craft of photography. In the classroom or on the road he follows William Yeats advice, “Education isn’t about filling a pail, its about lighting a fire.” It is no wonder Chris’ students find his approach contagious and empowering.
As an author, Chris has written both technical and creative books related to photography. One of Chris’ most recent publication is a best-selling photography book titled, “Visual Poetry – A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs”. In this book, Chris proposes that the pictures that we make, are a direct reflection of who we are. If you want to take more interesting photos, become a more interesting person. In addition, he sheds light on specific techniques that have helped many create and capture strong, memorable and lasting images.
