Dr. La Puma, board certified internist and professionally trained chef and also known as “ChefMD”, is the country’s leading physician voice for healthful food in health care. A nationally recognized expert in wellness practices and integrative medicine, and formerly a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and Professor of Nutrition at Kendall College’s School of Culinary Arts, Dr. La Puma also graduated from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (now a Le Cordon Bleu school) in Professional Cooking. He is the first physician to teach cooking and nutrition in a U.S. medical school, at SUNY-Syracuse, with RealAge® co-founder and Cleveland Clinic Chief Wellness Officer Dr. Michael Roizen.
Dr. La Puma founded and edited Alternative Medicine Alert, the leading evidence-based CME newsletter for clinicians on dietary supplements and integrative approaches. He founded and leads Chef Clinic®, a multidisciplinary hands-on approach to weight management. He is the inventor of GlutenFreeQuiz, a validated screening tool for celiac disease, and is medical director of ChefMD.com, which aims to help people become measurably healthier with what they eat.
Dr. La Puma appears in the national media and is a New York Times best-selling author. He has hosted “ChefMD” weekly for five years on Lifetime TV’s “Health Corner”, co-hosting with Ms. Joan Lunden and Ms. Leeza Gibbons, and writes regularly for jillianmichaels.com, intent.com and askdoctoroz.com. His most recent book is “ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine (Crown, 2008)”, an advice book on how to create and stick to an eating plan for 40 different conditions. With Dr. Roizen, he co-authored the Times best-seller “The RealAge Diet” and “Cooking the RealAge Way.”
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UCSB, Dr. La Puma performed his residency in internal medicine at West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA. He completed the first postgraduate fellowship in general internal medicine and clinical medical ethics, at the University of Chicago. He is credited with establishing physician-conducted ethics consultation in U.S. community hospitals, and has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 150 other contributions to the medical literature and three medical books including a CME book, in addition to his three popular books.
Repeatedly named “One of America’s Top Physicians” by Consumers’ Research Council, and cited as a “Secret Weapon” by The Wall Street Journal, Dr. La Puma has been honored with the AMA/National Association of Medical Communicators “Award of Excellence”. He is based in Santa Barbara, California and sees patients for lipid and weight control.
