Megan Birney is the Renewable Energy Specialist at the Community Environmental Council, a non-profit leader in environmental issues in Santa Barbara for forty years. The Community Environmental Council is a solutions-based nonprofit seeking to solve some of the regions toughest environmental problems. The CEC’s mission is to wean our region off of fossil fuels in one generation. Megan works with the community to support the responsible development of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind and wave power.
Megan is an expert in distributed and utility scale renewable energy. Projects have included consulting on a local Housing Authority solar project, and supporting the Lompoc Wind Energy Farm. She serves on the Steering Committee for the local Green Business Program, a recently formed program that has already certified more than 20 businesses and helped them reduce their energy usage, saving both energy and costs. Megan is also the point person helping local governments include climate change and greenhouse gas emissions into their planning processes.
Megan teaches a UCSB Extension course on energy sources, uses, and issues and can often be found taking advantage of UCSB’s spectacular location to catch a few waves before class.
